A frequently repeated claim states, in various forms:
“Long-term safety data doesn’t exist for any recent vaccine.”
We checked this as a general claim about vaccines authorized or recommended within roughly the last decade.
For vaccines, long-term safety monitoring doesn't stop at initial authorization. It typically continues through several channels: extended follow-up of original clinical trial participants, passive reporting systems like VAERS, active surveillance systems that track large vaccinated populations over years (such as the Vaccine Safety Datalink), and international registries that pool data across countries. Multi-year data exists for several vaccines authorized within the past decade through these combined systems.
For any given vaccine, the amount of long-term data available naturally grows over time, a vaccine authorized last year will have less multi-year follow-up than one that's been in routine use for a decade. It's fair to say that the newest vaccines on the market have less long-term data than older, well-established ones. That's a real and reasonable distinction.
The claim as stated, “doesn’t exist for any recent vaccine,” is a blanket statement that doesn't hold up against vaccines with a decade or more of post-marketing follow-up data. Several vaccines that were considered new ten years ago now have substantial multi-year safety datasets. Treating the entire category of “recent vaccines” as uniformly lacking long-term data conflates genuinely new vaccines with ones that have accumulated years of follow-up.
As a blanket claim about all recent vaccines, this is unsupported, multi-year safety data exists for several vaccines within the relevant window, gathered through ongoing post-marketing surveillance systems. The claim holds more narrowly for vaccines authorized very recently, where less follow-up time has passed, but that's a different and much more limited claim than the one being made.
